To best capture the full breadth, depth, and general radical-ness of ’90s cinema (“radical” in both the political and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles senses of the word), IndieWire polled its staff and most frequent contributors for their favorite films on the 10 years.

“Deep Cover” is many things at once, including a quasi-male love story between Russell and David, a heated denunciation of capitalism and American imperialism, and ultimately a bitter critique of policing’s effect on Black cops once Russell begins resorting to murderous underworld methods. At its core, however, Duke’s exquisitely neon-lit film — a hard-boiled genre picture that’s carried by a banging hip-hop soundtrack, sees criminality in both the shadows plus the Sunshine, and keeps its unerring gaze focused over the intersection between noir and Blackness — is about the duality of identity more than anything else.

“Hyenas” has become the great adaptations of the ‘90s, a transplantation of the Swiss playwright’s post-World War II story of how a community could fall into fascism as a parable of globalization: like so many Western companies throughout Africa, Linguere has offered some material comforts for the people of Colobane while ruining their financial system, shuttering their marketplace, and making the people totally dependent on them.

What a good gamble. 

The ’90s began with a revolt against the kind of bland Hollywood products that people might kill to check out in theaters today, creaking open a small window of time in which a more english sexy film commercially viable American impartial cinema began seeping into mainstream fare. Young and exciting administrators, many of whom facesitting are now key auteurs and perennial IndieWire favorites, were given the sources to make multiple films — some of them on massive scales.

Potentially it’s fitting that a road movie — the ultimate road movie — exists in so many different iterations, each longer than the next, spliced together from other iterations that together produce a perception of the grand cohesive whole. There is beauty in its meandering quality, its target not on the sort of conclusion-of-the-world plotting that would have Gerard Butler foaming at the mouth, but about the consolation of friends, lovers, family, acquaintances, and strangers just hanging out. —ES

Released within the tail finish from the millennium (late and liminal enough that people have long mistaken it for an item on the 21st century), the French auteur’s sixth feature demonstrated her masterful power to construct a story by her individual fractured design, her work usually composed by piecing together seemingly meaningless fragments like a dream you’re trying to recollect the next working day.
